New theme and features

Posted by Mohabot - May 11th, 2013

Got a new theme for BasiChat and a few extra features. BasiChat is a chat system currently in development, although I finished v. 1.0 quite a while ago. I'm however tweaking around with it as I find it's entertaining to continue building on it and watch it grow. Like the title implies it's a basic chat, and I don't intend it to become something grandious.

New features:
Email confirmation. Register and you get a mail in your junkbox. The mail contains an activation link which will direct your temporary account stored in temp_members to the real members database (or table). After the procedure you will be able to log on, otherwise you can not.

Userlist: Type /users or /online and hit enter. You get a list of currently online users which will most probably only list one person (you) because it'd be a miracle if multiple users would be using it at once. I've tried it while logged on with several instances of web browsers at once, and it does work.

Change nick and font color: This is part of the "config plan". There's a link which will open up a box, which will contain everything planned in the "config plan". Right now I've only finished two plans: switching nick and fontcolor. fontcolor is highly flexible as you can choose whatever color you want as long as its stated in its HEX representative. Im planning on adding a color swatch/palette, so for now you need to use programs such as Photoshop, GIMP or paint.net to get the color of your choice.

New theme: I'm not exactly fully content with the looks of it, but at least it doesn't look as depressing as before.

That's all for now. I'm gonna code some more features, and I already have a few in my head. Maybe you can suggest me a few features I could try implementing? That'd be neat.

Here's a new link to the chat btw.

And yes, no link yet. I promise, I'm totally broke and so have no money to buy a domain... haha.

Oh, nice, looks like you fixed the scrolling and invisible error messages too. How about making the config close when you apply changes, or adding a button to close the panel? Clicking 'config' again isn't so obvious.

Also, how about making the username the default nick when you sign up?

Also, any idea why the email shows up as spam? Because the chat's using an IP instead of a domain?

I guess it's because I haven't bought a domain yet. I still have ng-chat.com though but the title of it is a bit misleading. Besides that, the company I bought it from was so cheap it won't work properly. It redirect to a subfolder called /defaultsite although I have set it up to redirect to the root folder. Crazy huh.

And yeah, I guess default nick would be nice. Config thingy sounds fair too, so I'll work on it first before I jump into avatar selection (I need to learn how to upload files via ajax first)

Thanks for checking it out man. BTW, are you a coder too? I see you've done a lot of nice artwork, designs and stuff though.

EDIT:: Done! Did what you suggested.

Nice. :)

Yeah, I'm more of a designer than a coder. I know HTML/CSS and the basics of PHP/SQL but that's pretty much it.

I see. I find designing quite interesting too, although I wouldn't say I'm so very focused on it. It's fun just whipping together some quick simple designs for my coding projects if applicable. May as well get myself started for real and learn some neat trix on photoshop. Or GIMP.

Which of these (or neither) applications do you use personally?

Oh and yeah, I've done what you just said about the chat. Nothing worth checking out tho. :P

Neither, I use Fireworks. It's much easier to use, and not so feature-intense with stuff I don't need. Great for layout images and basic photo manipulation. I used to use Illustrator for vector images, but I've started using Fireworks for that as well. I draw in Flash occasionally since it has a smoothing feature for the brush that I haven't found on other programs, which is great for sketches and handwritten text especially.

OK, let me know when there is something worth checking out tho! :P

Will do!
